Domestic and family violence happens when one person in a relationship uses violence or abuse to control another person.

We tend to think of Domestic Violence as being the physical abuse of a women by her male partner however domestic violence is not always physical.  It’s also behaviour that exerts POWER and CONTROL over a person through fear.  These can include:

  • verbal abuse

  • psychological /emotional abuse

  • Financial abuse

  • stalking

  • sexual abuse

  • damage to personal property

  • technological abuse

Signs of an abusive relationship include typical behaviours of jealousy, possessiveness, put downs, threats and violence:

  • accusations

  • financial control

  • deciding what another person wear, eats etc

  • humiliation

  • constant monitoring including reading emails and text messages

  • discouragement or prevention from seeking friends and family

  • threats of person violence

  • threats of violence against children

  • physical assaults

  • yelling and verbal abuse

  • constant criticism
